“The words each of the three shared would go with them to their graves.”

The Queen is dead, long live the king. The Victorian era is coming to an end and war is on the horizon. Faced with millions of people dying and Europe in flames, Theodore Norlong, in Berlin, fights to stop the war to end all wars. Faced with a conspiracy to bring the nations of Europe down, he soon realizes he is not fighting a politician but a whole nation baying for blood.

In London, Catherine Urwin battles to keep up her growing family. Her husband’s jewellery shop burned to the ground and her only son, Andrew, fights against mental illness. With Edward Urwin desperately trying to rebuild a relationship with his family, Catherine must stifle her pride if she wants to do what’s best for her son.

All culminates in the Belgian town of Liege as Europe teeters on the edge of destruction.

The World As We Know It Pomp and Poverty Book 6 edition by James Farner Literature Fiction eBooks

James Farner is one of the finest authors I have read. He is in the same category as the best of the best - Leo Tolstoy, William Golding and John Steinbeck, to name a few. He has the ability to describe his characters, scenes, events, etc. so completely and so beautifully that the reader feels like he/she is there. Theodore, Gertrude, Catherine, Viktor, Edward, and now young Linton are real people to the reader - not just two dimensional characters necessary to fill out a story. We feel their pain, experience their fright, and relish in their victories. Finally, Farner has done his research and knows the eras in which his novels are set. If you like historical novels, you will love the Pomp and Poverty series. Farner interweaves the events of the day into each and every one of them, with this particular one leading up to Great Britain's involvement into World War I. Read it. You will be glad you did.

Loved the series. Kept me hooked on the story. Good character development throughout.
I really enjoyed this book. The character development was excellent. The characters are not simple two-dimensional, but have a mix of qualities. They accomplish heroic deeds, make poor choices, are confused at times, and grow with experience.
This series has momentum from start to finish. I feel as though the characters are so real that sometimes you want to smack them. Twists and turns are constantly occurring that you never really know where the book is going, which I like.
Gave 3 stars as I felt the book kind of drug on and really didn't have any spectacular page turning parts. I did not care for the ending at all, after 6 books I was looking for something greater.
Strong characters and good storyline. After reading all 6 books in this series I am confused about the ending ....or is it the end? Also miffed at the author for releasing bits and pieces at less than 250 pages and calling them books at $2.99 each! I will not be investing my time nor money on any more series by this author.
I feel like the characters in this series are family. I've come to know them from the author's writing. I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are fully 'fleshed out', do to speak. Since I'm from the US, it's been interesting to learn a bit of how the political process works in England. The main characters, Theo and Edward, are interesting, along with their descendants and other family members. It is an exciting look at England in the time before WWI.I recommend this book, and the others that come before it in this series.
